Interesting material on innovation, and this time some fresh ideas. FT runs a series of Mastering innovation. Sawhney and Wolcott summarize it as "You should give employees the freedom to imagine, but then provide them with the structure to act". Bessant recognises that "Innovation is more than the sum of its parts". More of this would do innovation good.
Dear Prof. Baets and Group Members,
According to the article, "Innovation is more than the sum of its parts", Dr. Bessant points out that Innovation management is very difficult, but it is increasing neccessary to the development of the company. Companies are beginning to realize that they have to managed their networks carefully and connecting them to generate knowledge and innovation.
And this is very similar to Prigogine's Entropy Production Theory, which in a high entropy environment that exposes to outside influnces, it creates a very interesting solution which molecules communicate to each other in a form of simultaneously changing color.
I think all of us would agree that in today market environment, the competitions are much fiercer and can come from any direction. Thus it is very similar to Prigogine's high entropy solution. And consequently, it is not surprising that companies have to communicate among each others and forming a networks. Simply because a company will not survive if they don't communicate or network to each others.

In the article “The search for opportunity” in Mastering innovation FT series INNOVATION is defined as "introduce something new”. In practice, innovation requires what I refer to as the three "I's": inspiration (creating or realising an invention); integration (generating something useful from the invention, such as a product, service or process); and implementation (using the invention to add value).
From above paragraph can we say that innovation is Enacted Cognition?

Innovation here, innovation there... It seems like this is a new topic, a topic which seems to treat the remedy against nowadays business problems. It looks like managers are regarding innovation as a mean to progress to a position where they are ahead of their competitors, where they are "save". It is funny that it is such a huge theme right now, as innovation is as old as the thinking mankind. But what is really innovative? Is it new products, new techniques or new processes? There is a nice french saying that states:"Plus ca change, lus ca reste le même chose". Innovation has to be of such a kind that things change in a way that alters the fundamental basis of the system innovating. Seen in this way, it is a danger to innovate, as noone knows where the new path leads to. It is a revolution with unpredictable consequences for its initiators, the results are not calculable. So, which wise business man should be really interested in innovating a working system, if he can´t be sure what he will get from it. To get precise: True innovation is the result of a crisis, and a crisis is the only fertile ground innovation can grow on. Do you want to innovate? The mix up what seems to be the state of the art, cause a little chaos, you know?! Chaos is the fertile ground Innovation grows on! But don´t worry, we already live and manage chaos; we only have to learn to hug it instead of trying to fight it by structuring, by trying to hunt it down with methods....

Indeed,it is no use to making employees believe that they are not pawns in the hand of a company. If a company allows its employees thinking, imagining ,and creating, it should then allow acting. If such is not the case, the company run the risk of suffering from a setback, i.e. the employees would be frustrated because they would have dreamed without satisfying their needs.

"Innovation, the lifeblood of many companies in the 21st century, is an inherently messy, intuitive and creative process" ("In a search of a metric system for innovation"; Andy Neely)
In a dynamic environment, innovations are needed to satisfy new needs and to cope with constant evolution of the environment.
One effective innovation realised by a company is the result of a selection of a hundreds of projects.
The management of innovations is very linked to complexity theory. First of all, interactions between internal agents and external sources is the best way to get more diversity of projects. Indeed, the more radical is the innovation, the more risky it is but the more profits you can get from it. Diversity and creativity are inter-related because both born in unstable and chaotic situations.
Then, from my point of view, the best way of managing the innovation is very linked with the "law of synchronisation" between the departments of the company. All the departments are interacting with each other: Marketing, Finance,Production... and share their information to check if the project of innovation is liable. All these interactions become with the time a kind of filter to select the best project.
Finally, even if a company has diversity of projects, creativity, good communication and interactions... there will always be surprises about the result! That's what is exciting in complex situations.
